There have been many surveys over the years on workplace enjoyment and many are not good reading at all! It seems there are a lot of people out there who just exist in a job and do not enjoy it. Workplace motivation, engagement and enjoyment are all very important to your happiness and wellbeing. With this in mind, we have compiled a list of questions you should ask yourself and take action on, to get more from your job, feel happier and essentially more motivated!
Who Surrounds You?
Within the workplace, the people who surround you can seriously affect your morale. If you stop and think about who it is that you talk to every day, you will see how this may affect your motivation at work. Spending all your time with people who are cynics or constantly critical will seriously affect your mood and energy. Try to avoid them! Hearing only negatives day in, day out will make any positives in your work hard to see. Sometimes It is hard to just cut ties with these types of people all at once, so slowly change the relationship dynamic. Don't interact with them as much, if you do talk to them check yourself if you are getting involved with a negative conversation. Do not be negative yourself, keep your conversation light, short and positive, sometimes this is enough to change their conversational attitude towards you. If this does not work maybe see if you can move desks with a valid excuse, or go for a promotion and move within the company. Sometimes a change of situation is all you need for that extra bit of motivation and excitement at work.
What Do You Like?
If you are not a hundred per cent happy within your role, there will be something that you like, something that you feel you excel at. Think about what attracted you to working in that role in the first place. Pinpoint exactly what you enjoy and what really motivates you. Talk with your boss about exploring the possibility of doing more of what you like to do, they may think it is a good idea! For example, if you work in digital marketing and LOVE content writing, talk to your manager about doing more of it! Doing something you love will increase motivation in the workplace as you find yourself enjoying your role more. Explain to your manager your passion for a certain subject and let them know what a great job you could do if you were to focus on this more.
How Is Your Mindset?
If you go into work with a negative mindset, even the smallest of things will affect your mood and morale. This is a serious factor that needs to change to help you get more from your current job. Start approaching your workplace with a positive attitude and stop letting small things bring you down. You will find by going into work with a positive attitude, you will feel incredibly motivated to do better! Self-talk is vital to how you see the world, and it’s incredibly important within the workplace. What Are You Learning?
One of the key factors for a lack of motivation within the workplace is that you are bored. Most people are engaged when they are learning new things, which makes them happy. If you don’t feel engaged, think about what you might like to learn within your role, or what you can do to get to the next level. Start working towards your promotional role and goals, gather the right experience and knowledge to step into those shoes. It’s a guaranteed way to get more from your job. We produced a great blog last week on how to get a promotion, follow this guide, you will not get bored and you may just get a promotion! How Hard Are You Working?
Working harder is vital to getting more from your job. It is easy to go into work, switch on at 9 and switch off at 5 and do just what is needed of you, so see what extra things you can do and do them. Throw yourself into the work and get as much done as you possibly can. Stop watching the clock and just ‘existing’ within the workplace. Commit to trying your best and working harder, you will be surprised how this will help you. Firstly your self-esteem will go up, knowing you are giving your job the best shot, secondly people will pick up on what you are doing and that is a sure way to start your promotion prospect! It seems weird to say work harder for more enjoyment, but it's absolutely true!
Are You Confronting Your Problems?
The fact you don’t feel engaged within the workplace can be a problem, and there are probably reasons why you feel that way. Pinpoint exactly what it is you don’t like, and deal with it. Communication is important within the workplace, and if you can’t confront your problems face on, they are only going to get worse. You will be amazed what can happen if you talk to someone, like your manager about your problems, what you feel is a massive issue may be an easily resolved problem in your manager's eyes. Don’t be scared to talk about it to someone, people are not mind readers, but they are problem solvers, so give it a shot to see if there is a solution!
Conclusions
Put all this into place, get more motivated and see what happens. We have already said try and do more of what you enjoy and reach for promotions.
