Are You At Home With Your Children?

If you are having to work from home or self isolate and you have children, don’t panic!

It’s understandable and completely normal if you are worried about trying to teach your children the basics in subjects such as Maths or English. However, if you try to see this as an opportunity for your children to also learn other things that wouldn’t be on their normal curriculum, this will create a much better experience for you both.

If you and your children can work together to create a plan, this could decrease chances of conflict between you. Encourage them to keep a daily diary to write down their thoughts about what they think is happening, what they want to do and don’t want to do so you can compromise and work together.

You should try and keep structure in place, so think about the following as this could help you get through each day:

  • Try and Set a daily schedule

  • Mix up their daily activities

  • Make sure YOU ALL have regular breaks

  • Get your children outside

  • Make healthy meals and snacks throughout the day

(and get your children to help)!

  • Let them have free time

  • Don’t enforce strict rules - try to be the voice of reason and provide them with safe and positive information and guidance

Think about the spaces you can create at home for your children:

  • An Arts and Crafts Corner

  • Sitting at the table for Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner. (As this could help to encourage conversation)

  • Make sure where possible any curriculum based learning is away from technology

These points are just some things you can think about whilst you and your children are at home during this time. Try to remember not to panic or worry that you aren’t doing the best for your children, as everyone is going through the same things as you.

As long as you keep your children safe and ensure they are happy, whilst still giving them the option to learn, (whether that be curriculum based or life skills), that is all you can do.
